Trivia
Jake Sully's initials (J.S.) are the same as John Smith, a central figure in the historical and often romanticized story of Pocahontas. Avatar shares many similarities with the Pocahontas story in plot and theme. Like John Smith, Sully is a member of an invading force who falls in love with a tribal princess, after learning her customs.

When Jake is examining his ponytail, Dr. Augustine states, "Don't play with that, you'll go blind." This is a common phrase that is taught to adolescent boys (referencing their genitalia) to discourage them from masturbating. It is shown later in the film that the Na'vi use their ponytails to link their minds during mating.

Jodie Foster was considered for the role of Dr. Grace Augustine.

Goofs
Cockpits of numerous aircraft are breached without the unshielded pilots being affected by the toxic atmosphere.

When Quaritch is scolding Jake for making out with a Na'vi, Jake moves his head to the right. In the immediate next angle, his head is straight.

The first part of the credits are shown over panoramic views of Pandora. Most of these shots are recycled from the movie, and reversed left to right to make it a bit less obvious. One in particular was taken from Jake's ikran first flight sequence, but with Jake and the ikran removed. But you can still the ikran's shadow pass over the rocks.

Q
What is the music in the trailer?
A
The tracks featured in the trailer are Fire-bombing London, Crowd breaks out and Helicopter Mayhem from the 28 Weeks Later: Original Motion Picture Score by John Murphy. The trailer can be seen here. For the second trailer (released October 30th 2009 and found here, the music is - in order - My Name Is Lincoln by Steve Jablonsky (found on the soundtrack to The Island), followed by Akkadian Empire and Guardians At The Gate by the "go to" trailer music people, Audiomachine.
Q
Is "Avatar" based on a book?
A
No. Avatar is based on an original screenplay penned by writer/director/producer James Cameron. However, the screenplay does contain elements and concepts from several science fiction works, including The Jesus Incident (1979) by Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom, Speaker For The Dead by Orson Scott Card, and Winds of Altair by Ben Bova, to name a few. Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 are in the works with release dates planned for 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively.
Q
How did Colonel Quaritch get the scars on the side of his head?
A
Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) states that he received the scars on his first day on Pandora. While the movie doesn't state how it happened, we can assume that the wildlife, likely a viperwolf or thanator (the large cat-like creature that Jake escapes), gave it to him.
