The film's source novel "Easy and Hard Ways Out" by Robert Grossbach has been described as being Kafkaesque and a companion piece to Joseph Heller's Catch-22 (1970). "Best Defense_ was changed a lot from the source novel and the film has been said not to have worked out significantly like the filmed version of the Heller novel did.
