Director Priyadarshan worked as the second-unit director of the original movie The Ornate Lock (1993), when he decided to remake the story in Hindi. Akshay Kumar was his first choice to play the male lead role, as was classical dance-trained Malayalam actor Vineet for the role of Shashidhar.
