Dominique Wilms was Otto Preminger's first choice for the part of Elsa, but she refused.

The Parisian framing sequences are in black and white (printed on colour stock) while the majority of the film, told in flashback and set on the French Riviera, is in colour.

Otto Preminger always liked this film, although he felt the American critics did not do it justice. The film was a qualified success in France, yet American critics felt the film wasn't French enough, a detail that amused Preminger.

When Raymond and Cecile race toward Anne's accident scene, they see a large plume of black smoke. Yet when they arrive at the accident scene, the car is underwater and there is no sign of any fire.

We hear the Band at c.6'50" and we see a clarinet-player performing, but the music has no clarinet part whatsoever included at that point in the soundtrack. Later, when the clarinet does eventually join the soundtrack, the fingering of the player bears absolutely no relation to the music actually being heard.

Anne Larson: You know, I spent my honeymoon by the sea 12 years ago.

Cecile: Albertine! I mean Léontine! Slight maid problem. Some weird sisters rotate working for us.
