The role of Bo Decker was intended for Fess Parker, but Parker was under contract to Walt Disney at the time, who wouldn't release him. Parker also didn't get the role eventually played by Jeffrey Hunter in The Searchers (1956) for the same reason and it was many years before he was even aware of it.

Q
Does the entire movie take place at a Bus Stop?
A
No. The Bus Stop play is set in a diner about 20 miles west of Kansas City in early March, 1955. A freak snowstorm has forced the bus and its eight characters to come together in the diner from around one o'clock until five o'clock in the morning. The interaction of the characters and the interweaving of their stories is the gist of the play's plot. The Bus Stop movie takes place in several locations such as Montana, Phoenix, AZ, a bus, a hotel, a saloon, a rodeo and Grace's Diner which is the final bus stop.
Q
What is 'Bus Stop' about?
A
Boorish and innocent cowboy Beauregard 'Bo' Decker (Don Murray) falls in love with Phoenix saloon singer Cherie (Marilyn Monroe). Bo has arrived in Phoenix to enter and win several events in a big rodeo there. However, Cherie does not want anything to do with the buffoonish cowboy and has her own plans to become a big movie star as she has traveled from the Ozark Mountains headed for Hollywood. Bo is so headstrong in his quest of marrying Cherie that he lassos and kidnaps her onto a bus headed for Montana. The final scene and denouement takes place at Grace's Diner where the bus is forced to stay due to a snow storm.
