Trivia
In 1816, Lord Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley, Claire Clairmont and John Polidori gathered at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, in the fabled "haunted summer," which has been depicted in several movies. In a drug- and alcohol-induced frenzy, they engaged in a contest to see who could write the best ghost story. Mary Shelley produced "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus." Byron began a vampire story but abandoned it out of boredom. Polidori picked it up and created "The Vampyre" (the forerunner to Bram Stoker's "Dracula"), whose title character, Ruthven, was modeled on Byron. Jonny Lee Miller portrayed the character named Ruthven in "Byzantium." Coincidentally, he portrayed the title role in the biopic "Byron."

Neil Jordan considered his frequent collaborator Stephen Rea to play Savella, but Rea was busy and Jordan had taken a strong liking the presence and voice of Uri Gavriel and cast him instead.

At one point in the film, Clara goes under the alias "Carmilla", the name of the Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu 's female vampire in Gothic novella.

Q
When and why did Darvell become a vampire?
A
Like Clara, Darvell was dying from something he caught during the war, probably pneuomia, and the brotherhood offered him a chance at eternal life, so he took it.
Q
What is the secret?
A
It's not a secret to the viewers, only to anyone not of the brotherhood. The secret is a shrine that has healing powers and is located in a cave on a barren island. The ill person goes into the shrine and meets a 'nameless saint' that looks like him (or her). The doppleganger kills him. Hundreds of blackbirds (or possibly bats) emerge from the cave and the waterfalls on the hills flow red. Later, the newly-created vampire emerges, bloody but alive.
Q
What is a soucriant?
A
A soucraint, also called soucouyant or loogaroo, is a type of vampire witch from Caribbean folklore who is said to live as an old woman during the day but to slough off her skin and turn into a fireball at night in order to fly through the air and sneak into the houses of sleeping individuals in order to suck their blood. Clara and Ella call themselves 'soucriants' but don't slough off their skin or turn into fireballs. In the context of the movie, the term 'soucriant' refers mostly to a vampire witch.
