Trivia
Alan Silvestri wrote 24 minutes of score (including over seven minutes for the final credits) for a 143-minute film. Aside from the Russian chorus and the Elvis song from the beginning, there is not one single note of written musical score in the film until Noland leaves the island (1 hour and 43 minutes into the movie). Only then does the musical score come in: an oboe, piano and strings are all that Silvestri uses. Every musical cue is a variation on the same melody, which is heard in full at the end.

The production employed several local Fiji islanders in the surrounding archipelago, including the neighboring Mana Island about a mile away. The locals were allowed to keep some of the supplies and tools as tokens of their help.

In the scene where Noland squats on the ground, contemplating an item that has washed up on shore, the shot is composed as an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), reportedly Tom Hanks' favorite film.

Goofs
When Chuck goes to use the restroom in the airplane, there is a small brown UPS sticker on the bottom right of the mirror on the FedEx airplane.

When Chuck throws the boxed volleyball with his bloodied hand after the failed attempt to create fire, the box is right-side-up; since he bends down to pick it up, this means that the fingertips should be pointing down on the ball. However, when he looks at the ball soon after, the box is upright but the fingertips are pointing upwards.

When Chuck starts paddling his wooden raft towards the breakwater, palm trees can be seen repeatedly on a length of land that is apparently not part of his small island.

Q

A
For detailed information about the amounts and types of (a) sex and nudity, (b) violence and gore, (c) profanity, (d) alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and (e) frightening and intense scenes in this movie, consult the IMDb Parents Guide for this movie. The Parents Guide for Cast Away can be found here.
Q
Where did Chuck get the paint?
A
It's not paint, it's his blood. When Chuck accidentally cuts his hand while trying to make a fire, he is shown bleeding. In his act of anger, he throws Wilson with his bloody hand. That's why Wilson looks like a hand-print with a face. Over the years he pricks his fingers for more blood to touch up the face as it wears away.
Q
Is "Cast Away" based on a book?
A
No. Cast Away was taken from an original screenplay by American screenwriter William Broyles, Jr.
