Neil Simon wrote the play of "Chapter Two" with actor Judd Hirsch in mind for the lead role of George Schneider. Hirsch withdrew from a TV pilot in order to play the part for the play's Broadway debut season. Hirsch did not get portray him in this film though as the part went to James Caan.
