The four leading actors all appeared in previous Sam Peckinpah films: Kris Kristofferson (Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) ), Ali MacGraw (The Getaway (1972)), Ernest Borgnine (The Wild Bunch (1969)), and Burt Young (The Killer Elite (1975)).
Although the movie was inspired by the 1976 song of the same title, the song really didn't have much of a plot. So after the screenplay was written, Bill Fries (aka CW McCall) recorded a new version of the song, with lyrics that incorporated the characters and events of the film. This is the version that is played during the final credits.

Hey, until you get a little better control over that machinery, I'd suggest you lay off them acrobatics.
What are the differences between the new UK/US-DVD Version and the Uncensored Version?
A
A short overview over the various releases and ratings in Great Britain: The uncut VHS was rated BBFC 15 in 1987, the Warner DVD released in 2001 was uncut as well and was even permitted for 12 year olds. The newest DVD release, this time by Optimum, was also rated BBFC 12, but lacks about two and a half minutes. Because we know that the earler DVD was uncut we can say that the cutting was not done in order to achieve a better rating. This new release was produced by Studio Canal in France for both the British and the US market. The US DVD is therefore cut as well. A detailed comparison between the newly released censored versions and the original uncensored version with pictures can be found here.
