The Spanish teacher was actually a Spanish and French teacher where (and when) Alexander Payne attended high school.

Since the movie was shot in a real High School (Papillion La Vista High School, Omaha, Nebraska), adjacent classrooms had real class going on while some scenes for the movie were being done. In the soundtrack, some background noises come from real teachers and students. The director decided to leave that in as to give the movie a more realistic sound.

Goofs
When Dave confesses his affair with Tracy, first he's in an office and he's wearing a shirt and tie. After the story is told in pictures the confession continues in another location and he's wearing a dark tee shirt.

In the last scene Jim McAllister is in Washington, DC. He says in the voice-over that, having spent the morning on the National Mall, he was on his way to the Holocaust Museum when the scene occurred. That scene was shot outside the Hays-Adams Hotel, just north of Lafayette Square and the White House, and Jim is clearly walking north on 16th Street; the Holocaust Museum is about a mile south of the White House and only a few hundred feet from the Mall.

Right before McAllister gets stung by the bee, while he is calling for Linda, a bug can be seen crawling on the camera. It is on the right side of the camera, where the tree is seen, and while it may appear to be flying or crawling on the tree it is obvious that the bug is clearly on the camera because of its proximity and crawling patterns.

Quotes
Jim McAllister: Dave, I'm just saying this as your friend, what you're doing is really, really wrong and you've gotta stop. The line you've crossed is... it's immoral, and it's illegal.

Tammy Metzler: [her campaign speech] Who cares about this stupid election? We all know it doesn't matter who gets elected president of Carver. Do you really think it's going to change anything around here? Make one single person smarter or happier or nicer? The only person it does matter to is the one who gets elected. The same pathetic charade happens every year, and everyone makes the same pathetic promises just so they can put it on their transcripts to get into college. So vote for me, because I don't even want to go to college, and I don't care, and as president I won't do anything. The only promise I will make is that if elected I will immediately dismantle the student government, so that none of us will ever have to sit through one of these stupid assemblies again!

Paul Metzler: [narrating] My leg wasn't bugging me too much and the weather was so nice, and every day after school Lisa and I would go to her house to fuck and have a hot tub.
