According to the director's commentary, Kapur mentioned that the role of the Pope (played by Sir John Gielgud) was originally offered to, and accepted by, Marlon Brando. However, plans changed when Kapur noted that many on set would probably be concerned that Brando would be sharing the set with them for two days.

Goofs
At the beginning of the film when Elizabeth is being arrested, she is addressed as "Princess Elizabeth". She was stripped of the title 'Princess' when Anne Boleyn was executed and called 'lady'. Mary Tudor made certain that distinction was maintained during her reign as she followed Catholic Law and considered Elizabeth a bastard.

When Walsingham enters Arundel home looking for the priest he picks up the little girl and if you look closely you can tell that he's holding a doll.

The beginning of the film shows Robert Dudley with Elizabeth while she was arrested. Historically, Robert Dudley, his four surviving brothers (including Guildford), and his sister-in-law (Lady Jane Grey) were all in the Tower of London indefinitely. In fact, Wyatt's rebellion threatened all of their lives and brought about the executions of Jane and Guilford, while Robert and his remaining three brothers would stay in the tower until being released later that year.

Q
How accurate is this movie to the actual history?
A
Only the basic story is true: Elizabeth going from Tower prisoner in Mary's Protestant-persecuting reign, to being crowned Queen and dealing with conspirators like Norfolk, who gets executed. The rest is fiction. Several characters who opposed or burdened Elizabeth, like William Cecil and Sussex, were in fact loyal to the Queen. Cecil was never retired of his duties, remaining Elizabeth's chief advisor until his death in 1598. Although Elizabeth's relationship with Dudley is true, the two probably never had sexual relations (Elizabeth, believing she was dying at one point, confessed no such relations existed between them). Dudley never turned against her, and the two remained close until his death in 1588. The deaths of Sussex, Ambassador Quadra, and Mary of Guise were never orchestrated, all being natural deaths. Bishop Gardiner was dead before Elizabeth became Queen.
