In the original script, the climactic events were set to take place on the minute that Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule. However, director Jon Amiel preferred to use something more timely so the Millennium Eve became the catalyst event.

An early scene in which Gin sneaks into Mac's hotel room and leaves the Time magazine on his bed was deleted but can be found (without audio) on the DVD. Director Jon Amiel said test audiences thought the scene unnecessarily delayed the first encounter between Gin and Mac.

Goofs
When stealing the mask it takes Gin about two minutes to pass through the laser grid. When she takes the mask, Mac tells her there are about 30 seconds left before the guard reaches the room. When the guard finally reaches the door Gin has already vanished, but the laser grid is still active. Given that, it becomes easy to explain that, in getting to the mask, she would have been slow and careful, but not necessarily so when she retrieved it. Also, with the practice undertaken, it would make sense that, in real time, it would probably take her about 30 seconds or so to get through it, and just appeared to be longer to increase the dramatic tension.

Q
How does the movie end?
A
Gin makes it to the ground safely, with the instructions to meet Mac the next day (New Year's Day) at 6:30AM at Pudu Station. The next morning, Gin makes it to the station, but Mac is late. When he finally appears, Gin is relieved, until she notices that he's accompanied by Thibadeaux, Cruz, and several FBI agents, and she learns that Mac made a deal two years ago with the FBI so they wouldn't prosecute him in return for him handing over Gin to them. Mac also was forced to hand over Greene, the Rembrandt, and the golden mask, along with the $7 billion that they stole from the ICB. "What do you mean $7 billion?" Gin says to Mac, knowing full well that they robbed the bank of $8 billion. Mac then slips Gin an airplane ticket and explains that he's willing to take the rap because she has her whole life ahead of her while he's nearing the end of his. Not intending to leave without Mac, Gin gets an idea of her own. She pulls out a gun and puts it to Mac's head, threatening to shoot him and forcing the FBI agents to stand down. She hops on the next train to pass through the station, and the FBI agents all race to the next station to apprehend her. Mac is left sitting alone on a bench in Pudu, mulling over the fact that it is all over between him and Gin. When the next train passes through, however, he is surprised to see Gin get off. She explains that she jumped trains when they slowed down at the next station. They hug each other and immediately begin making plans for their next job.
