One scene, where geologist Lee Silver tutors the Apollo 15 crews, was filmed in the same rock quarry where R2-D2 encounters the Jawas in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977).

Actor Bryan Cranston, who portrays Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, also portrayed astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom in the movie "That Thing You Do! (1996)". His Gus Grissom is interviewed on the make believe TV show Hollywood Television Showcase in the latter. Tom Hanks produced both as well as directed "That Thing You Do! (1996)" and segments of "_"From the Earth to the Moon" (1998) (mini)_".

Three actors who played astronauts also played astronauts in Apollo 13 (1995), but they all played different astronauts from the ones they had before. David Andrews played Frank Borman (Apollo 8) in the miniseries, but Pete Conrad (Apollo 12) in the movie. Ben Marley played Roger Chaffee (Apollo 1, died in the fire) in the miniseries, but John Young (Apollo 10, Apollo 16, Shuttle) in the movie, and Brett Cullen played Dave Scott (Apollo 15) in the miniseries, but Jack Lousma (CAPCOM during Apollo 13, slated for Apollo 20 which was cancelled, flew Skylab 3 in 1973) in the movie.

In one scene showing the earth from space, the famous Apollo 17 photograph is used where North Africa and the Arabian peninsula are visible, but the photograph is backwards in a reverse image. The negative was flipped before printing.

When Armstrong is training in the LEM landing simulator at Ellington Field near Houston Texas, mountains are visible in the background in one scene. Ellington Field is at 32 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level) and there are no mountains or even large hills in that area.

In Episode 3, Mark Hamon as Wally Schirra states that Gordon Cooper left the program when he is talking to Deke Slayton on the beach. This "conversation" would haven taken place in 1968. Cooper did not leave NASA until 1970, when Shepard and Slayton passed him over for command of Apollo 13.
