Trivia
The movie was a critical and commercial failure at the box-office.

Star Billing: Chevy Chase (1st) and Madolyn Smith Osborne (2nd) (as Madolyn Smith).

The film, starring comedian Chevy Chase, with the title "Funny Farm", and set in the countryside, implies that the movie is a farm comedy, but actually, as outlined by Rating the Movies, the picture actually "has nothing to do with farming". Moreover, given the slang medical meaning of the film's title as well, the film neither has anything to do with mental asylums / psychiatric institutions either.

Goofs
Andy's wet clothes cause two continuity errors. First, when he falls in the water as the boat leaves the dock at the picnic, he is fully dry when seen shortly after fishing in the boat. Second, on the way home from the picnic he is sopping wet as they stop at the kennel, but fully dry as they arrive home with the Irish setter.

In the final scene, as Elizabeth approaches then takes a seat on the bleachers, the crowd changes (amount and positions) between shots.

In an earlier scene, the ducks that Andy and Elizabeth 'own' are a mating pair (duck and drake). Later on, Andy mistakenly refers to the ducks as 'fellas'.

Q
Is this based on a book?
A
Yes. It is based on a book named Funny Farm published in 1985. It's about the same thing. The characters even all have the same names and position. The big difference is that, from what I read in a review, the book has a lot more profanity. The book was written by Jay Cronley.
