Trivia
The characters who are actors in the fictitious Galaxy Quest television serial are largely based on the actors in the actual Star Trek (1966) television series and its spin-offs. The film contains numerous references to events in the lives of the Star Trek actors.

The set of the NSEA Protector was built on an articulated platform so that it could move a few feet in any direction, for a touch of realism (instead of actors leaning in unison). When it was first used the set dropped two feet and shifted to the side, causing several cast members to fall out of their chairs and two lights to fall down.

Goofs
During the Galaxy Quest convention at the beginning of the movie, Tommy Webber is introduced as "Crack gunner, 'Laredo'...Tommy Webber!" However, it is demonstrated throughout the movie (and in clips of the original Galaxy Quest TV show) that Laredo is the ship's helmsman, not the gunner. The role of helmsman also fits with his character's catchphrase of, "Pedal to the metal, Commander!"

Jason Nesmith: Remember yesterday at the convention, those people dressed like aliens? They were aliens! They were termites or... or dalmations. I can't really remember cause I was kinda hungover.

Q
Why does Alexander wear the alien headpiece all the time, even when he is at home?
A
We only see Alexander away from a convention, appearance or the ship once, when he is in his apartment, on the phone to Gwen. It is likely, since he is still wearing most of his costume, that this scene takes place not long after he has gotten home after the convention, and he simply hasn't taken the headpiece off yet. Also, the glue may have made it extremely difficult to take off. Since they had another gig in the morning at a store opening, he may not have wanted to go through the trouble of taking it off. While on the ship, he likely wishes to maintain the illusion that is really is Dr. Lazarus, so as not to confuse the Thermians. It is also possibly a reference to the fact that most people expect Leonard Nimoy to have pointed ears in real life.
Q
Which "Star Trek" characters are the "Galaxy Quest" characters based on?
A
Cmdr. Peter Quincy Taggart is based on Captain James T. Kirk, Dr. Lazarus on Spock, Tawny Madison on both Lieutenant Uhura and Deanna Troi, Tech Sergeant Chen on Chief Engineer Scott, Lieutenant Laredo on both Ensign Chekov and Wesley Crusher, and Guy, aka Crewman Number 6, is of the infamous "red shirts", one-off characters who would go down to a planet with the officers and be quickly killed by aliens.
