The film was released about 15 years after its source novel, "The Golden Rendezvous" by Alistair MacLean, was first published in 1962. The book was MacLean's eighth novel and this movie was the 11th filmed adaptation of one of his stories. The film was released the same year (1977) in which MacLean's novel "Seawitch" was published.
