Trivia
In Dr. Arthur Friedkin's room, there is a book on a table; the book is just one page of runes that is repeated. The runes in the book are an old script used by the Norse (Vikings). The runes can be translated directly into the English language, and the words clearly read out a parody of "I've learned" written by an unknown author. The parody reads as follows: "Steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place. I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones who do. I've learned that we don't have to ditch friends because their dysfunction. They are more f**ked up than you think."

Goofs
At the very beginning of the movie, we see a summary of the episode of 'Grave Encounters'. But, at the end of the first sentence, the word Asylum is spelled wrong. The so-called episode is called: The Haunted Asyulm.

As the history of the asylum is revealed, it is stated that a former doctor performed grisly experiments on the asylum patients in the 1930s. In a flashback sequence referring to this time, a patient is shown in front of a television, watching static. However, the television was not introduced to the public until the 1939 World's Fair, and was not common in US households until the early 1950s. An asylum in the 1930s could not, and would not, have had a television.

Q
Is 'Grave Encounters' based on a book?
A
No. Grave Encounters was written and directed by the Vicious Brothers, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz. The movie is shot in faux documentary style, supposedly by people who subsequently disappeared, leaving behind only their camera equipment and whatever footage they shot. It's this 'found footage' that forms the basis of the film. A sequel, Grave Encounters 2, followed in 2012.
Q
How long were they in the psychiatric hospital?
A
At the beginning of the movie, executive producer Jerry Hartfield (Ben Wilkinson) explains that the film was assembled from some 76 hours of raw footage, meaning that the researchers were in the hospital for just over three days, which jibes with what their watches tell them.
Q
Where is Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital supposed to be located?
A
Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital is located in Maryland. However, the real filming location was at Riverview Mental Hospital, Coquitlam, British Columbia.
