According to director Lauren Montgomery, Hal Jordan's origin story had been previously covered in Justice League: The New Frontier (2008): "We really didn't want to spend a whole lot of time telling that same story over again. So here, the origin story is over and done before the opening credits."

Quotes
Hal Jordan: What did the Guardian mean when he said the Energy-Rod might have been helpful?
Sinestro: [to Hal] Let me tell you, friend. The only way to operate out here is by fear. They hit, I hit harder. They attack, I annihilate. I am the one constant, unassailable force against their chaos and you made them forget that. You think I enjoy this? Look at the universe the Guardians have created. We have the greatest power in the cosmos and what have they made us? Garbage collectors! We pick up the trash.

Q
What are the main differences between the Green Lantern: First Flight film and comic book properties?
A
First Flight is based on the Green Lantern comics, however the story and many details including characters have been changed with the major examples detailed below.Rookie lanterns (anyone not trained) don't get the Green Lantern symbol. They only get it after successfully completing training. Whereas in the film, Hal Jordan gets one with the uniform. The comics also don't let Green Lanterns use lethal force, until many years after the events in First Flight/Secret Origins, yet Sinestro kills Kanjar Ro.Boodikka is a "good" Green Lantern thought the comic book series and is even promoted to the highest rank. She does not die betraying the Green Lanterns to help Sinestro.Kanjar Ro shows Qward is in sector 324, however in the comics it's in the anti-matter universe. In the comics, Sinestro orders the Weaponers to make a yellow lantern ring and battery, as opposed to inheriting it after Kanjar Ro died.In Green Lantern: Secret Origins, Abin Sur is killed while escorting a prisoner called Atrocitus. And Hal's first mission is with Sinestro hunting down Atrocitus on Earth. Sinestro then takes Hal to his home planet. Hal learns that Sinestro controls his home planet and sector though fear. For this, Sinestro is imprisoned, where he learns about the yellow impurity, leading to the forming of his own corps. First Flight changes the storyline completely to make its own story, in no way related to that of the comics.
