In the original Grey Gardens (1975), David Maysles asked Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale who she would like to portray her mother Edith Bouvier Beale if a movie based on Grey Gardens were made, suggesting Ethel Barrymore, Drew Barrymore's great-aunt, despite the fact that Ethel Barrymore had been dead since 1959.

As part of his costumes for playing the pianist and music teacher George "Gould" Strong, Malcolm Gets wears a diamond ring; that ring was not a reproduction but was the actual ring that the real Strong had been given by the real Edith Beale. Strong's family members lent the ring to the film's production crew.

At one point in the film, Phelan Beale expresses his dislike of Gould by calling him a "god-damned Ganymede." In Greek mythology, Ganymede was a Trojan prince whom Zeus kidnapped to be his lover - so, in other words, Phelan is calling Gould gay.
