Trivia
The character of Marshal Duncan was played by stuntman Buddy Van Horn, a long-time stunt coordinator for Clint Eastwood, in order to create some ambiguity over whether he and The Stranger are one and the same.

Universal Pictures wanted the film to be shot on the studio lot. Instead, Clint Eastwood had a whole town built in the desert near Mono Lake in the California Sierras. Many of the buildings were complete and three-dimensional, so that interiors could be shot on location.

Goofs
The morning after his first night in Lago the stranger steps out of the hotel and the mayor says "good morning." The shadows on the ground clearly show that it is late afternoon as Lago is located on the western shore of Mono Lake.

When the Stranger buys drinks for everybody in the saloon, the shots of the bar from behind where the glasses are stored clearly show fluorescent lighting underneath the bar.

The clouds in the sky appear and disappear between shots in several scenes.

Q
Is the film cut for language ?
A
It appears to have been cut at around 45min into the film , when someone yells "What the .... you doin' to my fathers house ?" This is even true for the DVD version.
Q
Is there a book of this film?
A
Yes it is by Ernest Tidyman, and is available on ebay, amazon ect...
Q
So who exactly is the stranger?
A
This is purposely left ambiguous by Clint Eastwood to give it an almost supernatural feel, but the theories put forth are as follows:Theory One The stranger is Marshal Jim Duncan's brother who learned that the three men who killed his brother were being released from prison and would likely return to their town. So the stranger "passed through" the town in order to take revenge on the three men, and on the town itself for simply standing by and watching as his brother was brutally murdered. But this is a big mistake in the translated german version. Here he says, that the dead man was his brother.Theory Two The stranger was Marshal Jim Duncan himself re-incarnated to exact his revenge. (perhaps through a deal with the devil.) This would explain why nobody in the town recognized him, but he knew how exactly the Marshal was killed and he was able to kill the three men in the same way.Theory Three The stranger was the ghost of Marshal Duncan.
