Trivia
The Mayor receives a goldfish in a fishbowl from a Who who looks remarkably like the Cat In The Hat (he is only seen twice, briefly - once from behind, and later from a distance - and his hat has blue stripes instead of red). Later, just before the first attack by Vlad, the Mayor is resuscitating the fish. When the fish lands back in his bowl, he leans on the side of the bowl just like the goldfish in The Cat In The Hat.

Jim Carrey's second movie based on a Dr. Seuss story. The first was (How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)). Both stories have Whos in them.

When Horton is turning his ears into different hats, one of the hats is one worn by Bartholomew Cubbins in the Dr. Seuss book "500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins".

Goofs
When we first see Jo-Jo, the narrator introduced him as "the smallest who of all." But seconds later one of his little sisters appears in the same shot and she is clearly smaller than he is.

In order to save the speck of dust, Horton quickly sucks up some water from the pond and swallows it. However elephants can't drink through their noses. They use them to squirt water into their mouths when they're thirsty.

The mayor explains to his son that the family has been in Whoville for centuries. A few scenes later we learn that the city is planning their centennial. Actually they are celebrating their one hundred years of happiness and peace, so his family could have been there for centuries.

Q
Is the Whoville in this film the same as the Whoville in How the Grinch Stole Christmas?
A
In the original books, the Grinch's Whos and Horton's Whos are drawn the same way. In the Broadway musical Seussical, the Grinch's Whos and Horton's are one and the same, the Grinch being microscopic and living on the dust speck as well. The Grinch is also on the same world as Horton's Whos in the 1970 animated film of 'Horton Hears a Who'. However, in Ron Howard's Live action 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' movie, the Grinch's Whos live in a snowflake, so it depends on which sources you look at as to what the answer to that question is.
Q
What are some differences between the film and book?
A
While the film follows the book's plot faithfully, there are a few differences.-JoJo is not the Mayor's son in the book.-The chracters of Morton, Sally O'Malley, Mary Lou Larue, and the Chairman do not appear in the book. Likewise, none of the Mayor's daughters or any kids from Horton's class appear.-Vlad Vladikoff (Will Arnett) is not called upon by the kangaroo in the book. Rather, he is called upon by the Wickershams.-The kangaroo's son is much like his mother in the book.-The Mayor is not given a name in the book.
Q
Who is yelling for help on the spec in the beginning if nothing ever goes wrong in whoville?
A
Horton didn't hear a "Help", he heard a "Yelp". He probably heard the Mayor call out for Miss Yelp (his secretary), he also says "Yelp" when he staples his forehead, so Horton definitely heard a yelp.In addition, the movie was created after the Broadway Musical and presumably draws information from said musical. In the musical, the Whos were actually calling for 'help' because they saw that they were headed for a pond - they were completely aware of their predicament. When translating the story into movie form, it may have been overlooked that the logic no longer followed. This information should also be checked with the book - which is not available to me at the time of this posting.
