Trivia
Unsure of how to market the film after disastrous test screenings, Fox sat on the near-completed film for over a year, before finally giving it an unusually small release in only 6 markets (skipping over major markets such as New York City). The release was done with little to no marketing.
When Joe is being apprehended by the police in Costco, the background screens display why he is wanted: "For being a dick" "For excaping from jail" "For fucking up lots of shit"
All of the logos for actual modern day businesses are altered in the future. The exception is the logo for Fox News, which is the actual logo used by the network at the time of this film's release.
During Monday Night Rehabilitation, the "assdozer" tries to drive through the tunnel, but is too big. When it plows into the wall, a man is at the entrance of the tunnel. When the wall collapses, a second man appears at the bottom next to the first man. The first man runs out of the way, but the second man is crushed underneath the debris.
During President Camacho's speech in the House of Representin' he fires an automatic rifle to quiet the crowd. He fires upward and to his right, but debris falls on him from directly above.
Costco Greeter: [Greeting every customer]
Welcome to Costco, I love you. Welcome to Costco, I love you. Welcome to Costco, I love you. Welcome to Costco, I love you.
Fairly well. Reviews ranged from glowing praise to faint admiration, but bad reviews were and are very rare.
Q
Why did Idiocracy receive such limited theatrical release?
A
Fox Studios were unhappy with the film, and didn't market it or add any promotional materials. There is controversy as to whether or not this had something to do with the strong "anti-corporation" theme throughout the movie. In the end they opened the movie in under 10 cities in the USA. This was possibly a bad move as the critics who got to see the film were apparently very positive in their reviews.
