During casting calls, director Jim Sheridan recalls that after a long day of auditions, he was very glad to have found Emma Bolger to play Ariel. He said that that little girl "told" him that he had to cast her sister Sarah Bolger as Christy. Sarah was only 10, and he had wanted Chirsty to be 12 or 13. After exhausting all other options, he auditioned Sarah for the part of Christy and she turned out to be so impressive that he didn't mind about her age.
Samantha Morton, who plays Sarah, was 25 years old when the movie was filmed. She is only 14 years older than Sarah Bolger, who plays eldest daughter, Christy, in the film.
The child actors (Sarah Bolger and Emma Bolger) called "cut" and "action" in every scene. This was decided by the director and the girls early during filming, so that it would make the acting easier for them.
The camcorder would not be able to play back video in slow motion, as we see in the early frisbee scene. The shot was clearly made on film, overcranked, and then transferred to video to display on the LCD screen.
The events in the film take place around the year 2002. (not in the 1980's which is a common misconception). We know this because of modern refernces in the film such as the style of camcorder used by characters in the film. The film "E.T" was re-issued into theatres in early 2002, which explains why the family are watching the movie in a theatre. Also on the films official website there is a reference to the film being set in the "modern day".
