Trivia
For the sequence where one of the Martian drones eats Mrs. McKeltch, a special "eating rig" consisting of just the drone's head (with chewing jaw movements) was built for the closeup shots. The rig was built on a "seesaw" device so the drone could throw its head back to swallow. A short burst from a hidden fire extinguisher provided the drone's post-meal belch.

Q
Are there alternative endings to this movie?
A
Yes.Like the 1953 original (see more in that film's FAQ section), the German release version of the remake is significantly altered. Both 1953 and 1986 versions cut the twist ending revealing that the events of the film were just David's dream, as well as the following final twist with a real space ship landing. The 1986 version cuts from the moment that the space ship explodes (right before David awakes from his nightmare) immediately to the credits, missing approximately 3:42 minutes of running time. Thus, in the German release version, both the 1953 original film and its 1986 remake present the story as a straight adventure tale, in which everything presented happened and the Martians are vanquished by the military.
