Richard Hale serves as omnipotent offscreen narrator in the first half of the film and serves in character as Flynn's disloyal employee Hassan Bey. However, even though they are ostensibly different people, the narration stops after Bay is killed.

Kim shouts for the driver to stop and the cart comes to a skidding halt. The camera cuts away for dialogue between Kim and his schoolmate and then back to the cart stopped on the street. The horse manure that was beneath the cart when they stopped is suddenly gone and the street is clean.
