According to other scripts before Peter MacDonald became the director, Alain returns home to France with Viktor as Julot was killed in the battle with the Arabs in the first draft. Viktor betrays Galgani and is killed for it and than Alain kills Galgani. In the second draft Mackintosh comes with Alain to France and Mackintosh is killed and than Alain kills Galgani. When Peter MacDonald took over as director it was changed to when Alain comes into Galgani's bar. Alain instead aims his legionnaire pistol at Galgani and the bar goes silence and the music stops playing. What happens is that Alain takes Katrina and Galgani stews while in the earlier drafts he had a different name.

Lefevre is photographed for the machine gun demonstration against his will, thus leading to his discovery. One of the few guarantees afforded legionnaires is anonymity, and it is specifically forbidden for a legionnaire to be photographed without explicit permission.

When they are attacked at the waterhole, Guido is suppose to fire at an incoming horseman. But when he takes aim, the rifle bolt is in the open position which makes it impossible to fire. Yet he manages to fire anyway, and in the next shot the bolt is in the locked position
