According to Warwick Davis, the movie was originally planned as a scary kid's film, but the studio thought it would work better as a more adult horror, so inserts were filmed to increase the gore and violence.

Q
How old is the leprechaun supposed to be?
A
The leprechaun tells Deputy Tripet (David Permenter), when Tripet accuses him of being a child wearing a mask, that he is over 600 years old.
Q
Who dies in the movie?
A
Total body count is four. In the opening scenes, Mrs. O'Grady (Pamela Mant) panics, falls down the stairs, and breaks her neck after being scared by the leprechaun. When Ozzie and Alex take the gold coin to have it appraised, the leprechaun gets it back by jumping on the shop owner's chest and abdomen with a pogostick. On his way back from the appraisal shop, the leprechaun is stopped by Deputy Tripet, who thinks that the leprechaun is a child in costume. The leprechaun claws the deputy's face, chases him through the woods, and eventually breaks his neck. Toward the end of the movie, Mr. O'Grady, who is living in a rest home, is mangled by the leprechaun and later found in an elevator where he dies of his injuries.
