Trivia
The set designer patterned the interiors after the layout of Orchard House, Louisa May Alcott's family home in Concord, Massachusetts. This is the house she lived in while writing the book, and she imagined its events taking place there.

Costumes are handed down from older sister to younger, to underline both the family's poverty and the connections between sisters. Jo's red plaid dress worn to the ball where she meets Laurie is worn the following Christmas by Beth when she comes down the stairs after being ill; Jo and Beth are close to each other, as Meg and Amy are close to each other. Meg's blue striped dress that she doesn't end up wearing to Belle Gardiner's debut ball is worn years later by Amy in the scene where she announces she's going to Europe with Aunt March.

Goofs
When Jo tells the family she sold her hair for the train ticket, it looks as if her long hair is bundled under her wig. In real life, Winona Ryder's hair was very short and there were two wigs made for Jo March, one long and one short. What looks like long hair bundled up is really Winona's hair peeking out below the wig.

In the final scene, Prof. Bhaer's umbrella has a modern spring clasp.

Jo: Late at night my mind would come alive with voices and stories and friends as dear to me as any in the real world. I gave myself up to it, longing for transformation.

Q
Is this movie another remake of the 1933 and 1949 movies?
A
No. Although all movies adapted from Louisa May Alcott's book will tell a similar story, the 1933 and 1949 versions of Little Women were based on a script by Victor Heerman. Robin Swicord's screenplay is a readaptation of the novel and not a remake based on Heerman's script.
Q
A Note Regarding Spoilers
A
The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags have been used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.
Q
What is "rag money"?
A
Rag money refers to the money gotten from selling rags and worn-out household items to peddlers. It was a very small source of income; in most families, the women retained control over that money (rather than turning it over to husbands/fathers). In the March family, the girls took turns with who received the income for that month.
