It is a crucial point in the game and in their relationship, so that the dares could continue on or the game could finish from this point on, but they would never doubt each other and never separate after such a dare - making it the ultimate test of their love.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------From another point of view, this could be as a main (unanswered) question of the movie - never meant to be answered: to let the viewer choose what he would like to be as an ending:
a tragic end of immortalizing a big love in cement or a happy ending of two lovers aging (dying from old age), in both cases together.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------they died. what happens in the end is only what it should've been but never was, like the parts with them kissing in every moment of their lives (which never happened).
