When asked about the decision not only to cast the known actor John Lone for the role of Song, but also giving him second-billed star and how that may have ruined the revelation about his character, David Cronenberg has said that not only was Lone the best actor for the role, but also was because the ambiguity of whether the character of René was actually conscious he was dating a man, but just refused to acknowledge this to himself.
