Trivia
During the procession, the crowd sings. in Provencal language, a song dedicated to Saint Gens, a very popular local saint, who people pray to bring rain.
Yves Montand was raised in the area where the story takes place and had been a friend of Marcel Pagnol. Nevertheless he rejected the role when it was first offered. Montand was ultimately persuaded to take his role by wife Simone Signoret, who died during production.
Near the beginning of the film, when Manon plays the harmonica in the rain at the graveyard, it is obvious that the song she is playing does not match her playing position. For example when there is a high note, on screen it looks like she is playing a low note.
When Manon talks to the teacher in the field, she says the rocks 'are Cretaceous, they're all from the Quaternary'. These are two separate geological time periods.
