Trivia
There was an unrelated project called "Meltdown" written by John Carpenter in the late '70s, later set to star Dolph Lundgren and to be directed by John Dahl in the 1990s, but that project had nothing to do with this one. Writer/director Rick Drew developed the story from scratch and claims he had never heard of the alleged Carpenter script and received sole credit from the WGA.

Goofs
The group takes a 'refrigerated truck' in order to have cool air for the engine and gas tank, but when they are driving away it is obvious that the drivers compartment is completely open to the rest of the interior - this would be a problem during normal use as it would freeze the driver.

Q
How much force and acceleration is needed by an asteroid to shift Earth's orbit around the sun?
A
Let us use the rain at the end of the film as a clue. Does this indicate a potential shift in orbit is periodic by year so in the next 350-360 days can Tom's crew expect extremely high temperatures again ( and a sequel )? Perhaps the film's portrayal of a ( temporary? ) shift in weather can be attributed to a change in the Earth's axis or its own rotation getting offset. Can an educated physicist who has seen this movie better answer any of these questions?
Q
What was that blue tinged ring created by the asteroid?
A
My assessment of this movie is that the Earth's orbit was not significantly moved by the asteroid. Due partly to the lack of verification by scientists in this film ( there would be global review and action ) they overlooked the fact that our Earth's ozone layer protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone#Ozone_layer
