The character of Winslow Leach (the Phantom) was named after director Brian De Palma's mentor, Wilford Leach.

Much of the movie deals with birds: The names Phoenix and Swan, the Phantom's bird-like costume, Phoenix's dress after her first appearance, her feather jacket, Swan's bird vest, Beef's bird tail during his number. Even the logo for Death Records is a bird.

Goofs
In the bathtub, Swan mentions that Saturday, November 19, 1953, was the day he wanted to commit suicide. November 19, 1953 was on a Thursday.

When Winslow is visiting the Death Records building for the first time, Swan Song Enterprises is visible above the doors. Swan Song was apparently changed to Death Records by the producers to avoid legal hassles with Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label.

Brian De Palma can be seen at around 1:02:58. He's right there plain as night, in the darkness just over Phoenix's left shoulder, sitting in a director's chair with his right arm raised, along with another crew member over Phoenix's right shoulder, then he vanishes when the spot picks her up.

Quotes
Swan: Winslow, what a foolish thing to do. Didn't you read you contract closely? See where it says Terms of Agreement, can you read what it says? "This contract terminates with Swan." No more suicides, Winslow. You gave up your right to rest in peace when you signed this contract. What if you do find a loophole? Is that what you're thinking? Forget it. That stays sealed only as long as I have the power to bind you. If I'm destroyed, that gaping wound opens. You might say we terminate together.

The Phantom: [singing] Like a circus on parade / Seldom close enough to see / I wonder through an angry crowd / Wonder what's become of me / To work it out, I let them in / All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been / All the devils that disturb me / And the angels that defeated them somehow / Come together in me now.
