Richard Dreyfuss:
The Jaws (1975) star appears as fisherman Matt Boyd at the start of the film. Dreyfuss was paid a reported $50,000 for his cameo in the film. He donated his entire salary to charity. Boyd is dressed like Hooper, the character Dreyfuss played in Steven Spielberg's masterpiece.
Ashlynn Brooke, Gianna Michaels:
The adult film actresses both play victims. Michaels plays the parasailing girl. Brooke plays the member of the cheerleading who is cut in half by the loose steel cable.
When the paragliding girl is about to be attacked by the Piranhas there is a set of close up shots where you see her in the water up to the waist. To do this in paragliding, you need to boat to be moving. However in the shots you can clearly see that the actress is motionless.
To help Kelly from the sinking boat, Jake dove under water holding a walkie talkie. It would have been impossible to use the walkie talkie because it should be shorted from being soaked in water. Jake however, was able to call his Mom on the walkie talkie to drag them from away from the sinking boat. As equipment used on the Sheriff's Dept. patrol boat on the water it would make sense the hand held two way radio Jake used was a waterproof Marine model walkie talkie like the Motorala EX560 XLS which meets JSI4 standards (submersible to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes) .
When Jake uses the ski rope to rescue himself and his girlfriend from inside the ship, the rope is shown being threaded through the railing on the deck of the boat, in addition to stretching across the entire deck. They would not go directly away from the boat as shown in the film, but yanked up to the deck via the railing.
As he is fending off the piranha with the outboard motor, he is seen getting lower into the water, grimacing in pain, making it obvious he was being eaten. He loses both his legs but in the sequel Piranha 3DD he has a metal stump for a leg with a shotgun attachment.
Q
What happened to Kelly's jock boyfriend Todd?
A
During the massacre Todd (Cody Longo) was last seen jumping onto a boat and driving it through the swimmers in a desperate bid to escape to the shore. The boat's engine cuts out due to a swimmer's hair being caught in the rotor. The swimmers surrounding the boat try to climb aboard the boat to escape the piranha but end up capsizing it, and everyone (including Todd) falls back into the water. Todd is presumably eaten, but his death is never shown.
Q
Is "Piranha" based on a book?
A
No. Piranha is a remake of Piranha (1978), which was a parody of Jaws (1975). The new film was written by American screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. A sequel, Piranha 3DD, is set for release in 2012.
