One of the storefronts in Sweethaven reads "O.G. WATTASNOZZLE", Professor O.G. Wottasnozzle was a character who appeared in the "Thimble Theater" comic "Sappo".
This film ended Paramount's involvement in the "Popeye" franchise, having released the 1933-57 animated cartoons, and outsourced production on some of the 1960s TV cartoons from King Features. In 2012, Paramount licensed US/Canadian home video rights to much of its catalog to Warner Bros., and this film was among the titles that were licensed to them. Warner Bros. has owned the Fleischer/Famous "Popeye" cartoons outright since 1996.
The Paramount logo used at the opening was never used for any of the Paramount Popeye cartoons, though it is portrayed as being from a Popeye cartoon. Also, the opening credits sequence shown (doors of the wooden ship) was from the earlier Fleischer Studios cartoons, as opposed to the later Paramount cartoons.
Just before Pappy starts singing "It's Not Easy Bein' Me" his pipe is in his mouth, then after he starts singing the pipe disappears, then near the end of the song when he's tied up it's in his hand.
When Popeye is hit in the stomach by Oxblood Oxheart after Oxblood accidentally knocks out his mother, Popeye went rolling backwards, but in the next shot he's rolling forwards into the ropes.
