Despite the title suggesting that this is a sequel to Privateer (1993), this game is not set in the Wing Commander (1990) universe like the previous game is. Everything is different and new; spacecraft, peoples, planets, culture, history, government and military. There is no "Terran Confederation", instead law and order is kept by the "CIS", however a "confederation" is vaguely mentioned once or twice in the in-game information database (the booths)

Six of the eight main planets in the Tri-System; Anhur, Crius, Hades, Hermes, Hephaestus and Janus IV, are named after mythological Gods from the Greek, Roman and Egyptian eras. Karatikus is named after Caratacus, the leader of a British tribe who resisted the Roman invasion. The planet Bex, which produces Bex Beer, was probably named after Beck's, the German beer brand.

David Warner later played Admiral Tolwyn (replacing Malcolm McDowell) in Wing Commander (1999) the film adaptation of the Wing Commander games also produced by Origin (the first Privateer game was a Wing Commander spinoff)
