Stephen Fry and Alan Davies were originally cast as the leaders of the "clever" team and the "stupid" team, respectively. Michael Palin was asked to be the host, but he didn't feel he was right for the role. After Fry and Davies settled into their roles, the idea of having two teams was discarded.

There have been several attempts to broadcast the series in the United States. Comedy Central, PBS, Discovery Channel and BBC America all showed an interest. But the main issue preventing this is the cost of clearing the rights for the many pictures shown on the screens in the background. They are cleared for UK usage only.

And in one of the F episodes in season 6 ("France"), Fry asked Alan a question in french to which the correct answer was Blue Whale, but because it was in french, Alan didn't understand it.
