Trivia
This film was shot in 1978 but did not launch into theaters until 1980, a production period that spanned around two-and-a-half years, similar to that of Titanic (1997). As such, the film was first released about four years afters its source novel "Raise the Titanic!" by Clive Cussler was first published in 1976. The book was Cussler's first best-seller. The film was made and released about sixty-eight years after the RMS Titanic sunk in 1912. The film was made and released about seventeen years before the James Cameron Oscar winning film Titanic (1997), this film's critical and commercial failure was the cause of some initial doubt around the development of the Cameron film.

Due to this picture's failure at the box-office, the movie has been cited as one of the reasons that Lew Grade withdrew from the movie business. Grade originally turned down the project, but after the original director left and the script was re-written, Grade saw the film as the start of a potential James Bond-like franchise with lead character Dirk Pitt and subsequently bought the rights.

When the team examines the horn retrieved from the wreck, they note that the instrument was presented to its owner after "three years service on the Olympic". The RMS Olympic, the Titanic's sister ship, was launched in 1910 and entered service in 1911. No one could've served 3 years on it by 1912, when the Titanic sank.

Dr. Gene Seagram: What's so funny?

John Bigalow: What a lovely thing she was... Standing as high in the water as one of your skyscrapers, longer than two rugby fields, and furnishings to match the finest mansions in England. She was one of a kind, no question about it, and God himself, they said, couldn't sink her. Then in two hours she was gone... and fifteen hundred souls with her.

John Bigalow: It's an odd thing, you know. I've had a few ships shot out from under me. More than my share. Three in the 1914-18 fracas, and two in 39-45. But all anybody ever asks me about is the Titanic.

Q
Can the Titanic be raised?
A
The problem with lifting anything from that far below the surface of the water with balloons is the immense pressure of at least four tons per square inch. Just how would it be possible to inflate a balloon? Then how do you attach the tens of thousands of balloons to the ship without ripping whats left of the metal to pieces? And how on earth do you apply enough lift to get Titanic out of 70 feet of mud?
