In 2009, a reboot of the film was announced and Robert Rodriguez was announced to direct and Rose McGowan was announced to star as Red Sonja, succeeding Brigitte Nielsen in the role. But, due to the 2011 reboot of "Conan the Barbarian" bombing at the Box Office. Production on the reboot was abandoned and both Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan backed out of the project as of 2015, the reboot is in development hell.
The original theatrical trailer of this movie contains cutting room-floor footage of scenes glimpsed only briefly in the film's prologue: Sonja, left to perish in her burning home, is saved by her dying brother Barlok; Gedren, prior to her disfigurement, addresses her soldiers and slaves.
When Red Sonja and her companions are climbing a sheer wall to enter Queen Gedren's castle, her hair and clothing items are hanging "into" the wall, revealing that the actors are in fact crawling across the floor.
When Falkon is pulling Red Sonja under the gate from the room with the talisman, he loses balance and pushes down on the gate Kalidor is trying to hold up.
The credits say that the movie is based on characters created by Robert E. Howard (who died in 1936), who created the basic Hyborian setting, as well as the character Conan (who appears here under the name Kalidor), but omit mention of writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith who created the title character Red Sonja in 1973.
Who is the star of this movie? Arnold Schwarzenegger or Brigitte Nielsen?
A
Brigitte Nielsen, although you wouldn't know that by looking at the poster or trailers. Schwarzenegger was already a star from Conan and the Terminator and the makers of this film were looking to cash in on his name. His role is simply as a supporting character, with similar screen time and plot importance as the other supporting characters.
