Producer James Woolf originally intended to cast Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons in the lead roles.

This was essentially the first British film to openly depict adultery and suggest that sex was an enjoyable act. Naturally this landed it in hot water with the censors who initially refused to give it a release certificate. It eventually acquired an X certificate and went on to become a major box office success, opening the floodgates for more adult fare.

Goofs
The story takes place in 1947, but all the women's fashions and hairstyles are strictly in the contemporary 1958 mode, when the film went before the cameras.

When Joe drives past the Browns' house for the first time the cars parked in front are obviously cardboard cutouts

It should be noted that the book was first published in 1957 in the UK. It was meant to depict the post-war class, social and economic structures still in place across Britain after the time. 1947 is not the year in which the story takes place.

Quotes
Susan Brown: Joe, wasn't it absolutely the most wonderful wedding? Now we really belong to each other, till death us do part. Darling, you're crying! I believe you really are sentimental after all.

Q
Midwest Premiere Happened When and Where?
A
According to an ad in the Chicago Tribune, the film, Room at the Top, had its Midwest Premiere at the Esquire theatre (Oak near Michigan), on Friday, April 24, 1959; the ad warned, however, "A Motion Picture so frankly physical . . . so boldly unashamed . . . we recomment it for adult audiences only!"
