Trivia

This is Oliver Stone's first film in nearly 17 years to be photographed with Panavision anamorphic lenses. After Nixon (1995), his 2.35:1 films were cropped to that ratio via shooting in Super 35. He was convinced to return to anamorphic by cinematographer Daniel Mindel, who has shot all of his features except Domino (2005) in the format. Mindel told Stone during their first meeting that if the plan was to shoot in Super 35 or digitally, then he wasn't the right man for the job.

Oliver Stone began working on the screenplay adaptation before the book was published. So confidant he was of this story that he himself contributed to investing in the project.

Goofs
When the hit-man disguised as a motorcycle cop comes up to the guy's car, after pulling him over, he has his hand on his holstered pistol. The pistol does not protrude through the bottom (barrel) - standard issue type. But, when the hit-man shoots the guy, there's a silencer on the barrel. There was no time to have screwed one on. However the hit-man has a holstered pistol on his right hip; he grabs the weapon that he uses to kill Frankie with his left hand from the back of his body.

When Alex is going to be executed, O is being forced to watch by Sophia who is standing right behind her chair. In the next frontal shot of O, Sophia isn't there, but in the subsequent ones she is back.

Q
A Note Regarding Spoilers
A
The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags are used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.
Q
Are Ben and Chon lovers?
A
It's insinuated but unlikely. Lado's trainee, Esteban, theorizes them to be lovers as he watches Ben and Chon with O returning from a restaurant, and Elena tells O that Ben and Chon wouldn't share her unless they loved each other more than her. However, Ben and Chon show no signs in the movie of being IN love, nor of being lovers with each other.
Q
What are the differences between the Theatrical Version and the Unrated Version?
A
While the theaters got an R-Rated version of the movie (for strong brutal and grisly violence, some graphic sexuality, nudity, drug use and language throughout), Stone assembled a longer Unrated Version for the DVD/Blu-ray releases. This cut extends the movie by more than 10 minutes and includes solely character scenes. Especially del Toro's character Lado gets a lot darker here and we also get to know more about O, Marina and Dennis. If you look at the small changes at the end of the theatrical version, you may conclude that it tries to let Lado and Dennis appear a little more likeable. A detailed comparison between both versions with pictures can be found here.
