QWhat does "Belle de Jour" mean?
ABelle de Jour is a French term that can be translated as "beauty of the day" or as "woman of the day." In the context of the TV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, it refers to a prostitute.
QIs this show based on a book?
AYes. Secret Diary of a Call Girl is based on two books, The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl (2005) and The Further Adventures of a London Call Girl (2006) by a London prostitute and writer who uses the nom de plume Belle de Jour. However, it actually goes back further to the blog that Belle has been posting online at http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com/. In 2003, her blog was selected as 'blog of the year' by The Guardian, which inspired her to write the two books. It is from the blog and these books that episodes of Secret Diary of a Call Girl are taken.
