The role of Ann was originally written for Elizabeth McGovern, and was later offered to Brooke Shields, who turned it down. In 1989, at the Sundance Festival premiere, Steven Soderbergh told the audience that he'd originally thought Andie MacDowell was too weak an actress to even audition, because of her work in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984).

On the first day of production, the producers sent Steven Soderbergh a telegram, joking that they'd heard reports that he couldn't direct traffic. Twelve years later, Soderbergh won an Oscar for directing Traffic (2000).

The script was written in about two weeks.

Ann's necklace when she's in bed with her husband, asking him if he's having an affair.

When Anne visits Graham's house, he hands her a half-full glass of iced tea. Later, when she nearly spills it, the glass is almost full.

When Graham watches the first video, the sound of a film projector can be heard in the background. Video doesn't make that sound.

Ann: I think that um... I think that sex is overrated. I think that people place far too much importance on it, and I think that stuff about women wantin' it just as bad as men is crap. I mean I think that women want it, I just don't think that they want it for the same reason that men think they do.
