Margot Kidder and Jennifer Salt were roommates in Southern California in the early 1970s while they were struggling performers. They held parties for their friends and neighbors who included Paul Schrader, Blythe Danner, Bruce Paltrow and Brian De Palma. One year at Christmas, Kidder and Salt opened separate boxes under their Christmas tree and each one contained the script to this film. This project was De Palma's gift to them.

Brian De Palma said the film's producer doubted anyone could be stuffed into a sofa bed, but the director recalls, "I shot it in one shot to show that you can in fact fit somebody into the sofa bed."

Jennifer Salt cites the character of Grace Collier as her personal favorite of her performances.

Danielle and Phillip have their date after their TV appearance in Manhattan. Phillip tells her he will get his car. After their date they are seen taking the Staten Island Ferry yet he drives her to her apartment building in his car. While no longer the case, before the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 vehicles were allowed on the ferries.

When the woman is writing on the cake she is writing horizontal along left to right under the main floral decoration but when the man opens the box the writing is turned 90 degrees putting the main floral decoration to the right hand side as you read the message

After Grace and the police have exited the apartment building, her mother comes out of the front door and during the following conversation suggests that Grace should change clothes. Grace then walks back into the building to do this, even if she lives across the street.
