Sam Peckinpah briefly flirted with the idea of filming Ray Bradbury's story, but was unable to raise the necessary financing.

Pre-80s Disney regulars Darren McGavin, Dick Van Dyke, and Dean Jones were the first considerations for the role of Charles Halloway. Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, James Garner, and Hal Holbrook were also considered to play Charles Halloway.

The lines: "And in despair I bowed my head; 'There is no peace on earth,' I said; 'For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!' Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: 'God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men'" is from "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day," a Christmas carol based on the 1863 poem "Christmas Bells" by American poet (from Maine) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

When Jim Nightshade buys the lightning rod with cash and coin, he has a Lincoln Memorial penny, which wasn't minted until 1959. The story is set earlier.
