In order to finish the regular game (i.e. the final showdown with Bowser), Mario must first collect 60 Power Stars. There are a total of 120 Power Stars scattered among the Galaxies, including the 7 Grand Stars. If Mario collects them all, the player earns the option of playing the entire game over again as Luigi, bringing the game's grand total of Power Stars to 240.

The Star Bits that the Lumas love to eat are based off of a type of Japanese candy called "konpeitô".

First appearance of Rosalina. She has since been featured as a playable racer in Mario Kart Wii.
