Trivia
Producer David Puttnam was impressed by Harry Nilsson's song "1941" and asked writer Ray Connolly to create a screenplay based on it. The resulting film resembles the song in all key respects except a funfair substitutes the circus of the song.

The shop owned by Jim's mum is located at the corner of St. John's Hill and Meaders Road in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The site is still recognizable but the shop has since been converted into accommodation. Also, the nightclub featured was La Babalu, also located in Ryde on the site of the old airport. A McDonalds Drive-Thru and Car Wash now occupy the site. Many of the regular customers and local well known faces from the town featured as extras.

It is rumoured that Nilsson made a cameo appearance in the film which may have ended up on the cutting room floor.
