Why are people on the Ark?

Earth had a nuclear war, and in order to save the human race they live in space. And are waiting in till the radioactivity's low enough to begin re-populating the planet.

Why were 100 people sent down to earth?

100 people were sent to Earth because members of the Ark needed to know if it was survivable. This is due to the Ark slowly running out of air, which will kill people eventually. In order for people to survive, they needed to find another way of living, and a potential place was to move to Earth to repopulate.They sent down 100 young criminals because it is easier to find out from a larger group of people, the general consensus of how people are surviving, and if they are dying due to any connected things etc. This was monitored using bracelets that transmitted their vitals back to the Ark. They also made sure to send down people who didn't contribute to their society on the Ark, so there were no real losses to the community.
