To mark the occasion of Oscar's 70th birthday, the show featured a segment called "Oscar's Family Album" in which the academy invited every living actor who had ever won an Oscar in the four acting categories, honorary recipients and some who had received the now defunct juvenile acting award. They were seated on riser benches and the camera went from actor to actor and announced their name and the film for which they had received an Oscar. Of the 134 recipients who were still living, 70 attended. Marlon Brando and George C. Scott who had both refused their Oscars years earlier were not invited. Due to a clerical error the invitation sent to Dorothy Malone did not arrive, an oversight which is said to have angered her.

Ashley Judd walked onto the stage in a white dress with a high front slit and no panties and was briefly exposed on camera.

Quotes
Herself - Winner: Best Costume Design: Thank you very much to the Academy. I am deeply honored to accept this award on the behalf of David LeVey, Beth Koenigsberg, Lahly Poore, Matt Reitsma, Dale Wibben, Dominic Gherardi, Jean Gold, and the rest of my remarkable costume crew. Their dedication, talent, friendship and guidance helped fulfill my dream to bring the spirit of Titanic and her passengers to life. Thank you, Jim Cameron, for the first-class passage. Thanks, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini, for such fine navigation. For my parents, my husband, and finally my two daughters Tess and Hana, whose beauty is my greatest inspiration, thank you.

Billy Crystal: Matt Damon is so young, the results in his category were tabulated by Fisher-Price Waterhouse."

Himself - Winner: Best Visual Effects: Well, this winning thing is pretty damn okay, that's all I can say. I'd like to absolutely thank Jim Cameron for letting us be a part of motion picture history. It's just fantastic. Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini, thanks for the incredible support. I want to be the first to congratulate Digital Domain, Cari Thomas, Mark Forker, Erik Nash, our friends at VIFX for Academy Award-winning work on this film. And I'd like to thank my lovely wife Cynthia.
