Trivia
Was originally set up at Elie Samaha's now defunct Franchise Pictures. "Sea of Love" director Harold Becker was attached to direct. Statham was already signed on to star and stayed with the property through turnaround, before the screenplay found its home at Ominlab Media.

The original script and production title was "Baker Street".

Aldwych station was chosen to film the underground scenes because the true Tottenham Court Road station had been modified extensively in the early 1980s. Only Edgware Road still has any resemblance to its original look.

Goofs
The use of the thermal lance is unrealistic. A skilled operator would check the gases are on and at the correct pressure before ignition, rather than relying on a third party to "turn on the oxygen" at the cylinder. As both the oxy-acetylene torch and the lance have shutoff valves, the operator could isolate all the gases if required. Since Bambas was the expert on drilling / tunneling, it is unlikely he would have allowed anyone else to operate the lance, as they would have had no experience of it.

The Mini that Martine rolls up in early on in the film is clearly later than a 1971 model (even allowing for the fact that Minis have always been subject to heavy customisation).

While at the cocktail party Anthony Johnson's Gunshot is playing in the background, this song didn't exist until 1981.

Q
Is this a true story?
A
The movie is a speculative look at real events. There really was a robbery at the Lloyds branch on Baker Street with many of the broad details being true. The thieves did tunnel into the vault from Le Sac and really were overheard by an amateur radio operator. Michael X was a real black power activist who had a number of run ins with the law including the one depicted in the film where he forced a landlord whom he accused of extortion, to wear a slave collar. Gail Benson was a real person who was romantically involved with black activist Hakim Jamal. She was murdered by Michael X.Much of the details of the crime are invented for the movie, however. The idea that the robbery was commissioned by British intelligence to retrieve incriminating royal photos is speculative. Also speculative is the reason given in the film for Gail Benson's murder. Her family insists that the idea that she was a spy is "ludicrous". Also, there seems to be some disagreement over whether a D-notice was issued. Some sources say that it was but papers were also reporting on the heist months after it happened. The film also suggests that the robbers were never caught, but some sources suggest that they were in fact arrested and convicted.
Q
Is this movie based on a novel?
A
No. It was taken from a screenplay written by British television writing partners Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and based on a 1971 true-life robbery of a bank in Baker Street, London.
